ACTING TOGETHER — socio-drama
for improved interpersonal and intercultural communication competence

Socio-drama has long been known to many instructors, both in and outside the world of ELT. This new photocopiable text with 80 scenes will have tempers sometimes running quite high! The textbook allows learners to:
- acquire new vocabulary and high-frequency idiomatic expressions
- focus on problematic grammar
- discuss the situation just enacted
- become HIGHLY attuned to underlying problems in communication
- avoid a conflict situation or at least defuse it
- communicate more effectively and with increased confidence
Each case, or scene, presents a concrete scenario, together with the “cast of characters.” A brief conversation soon points to a serious problem. Can learners pinpoint the problem(s) and act out the end appropriately? If not: overleaf are questions for analysis and comment to foster discussion. Once they have full understanding of the issues at hand, learners reenact the dialogue and, armed with the necessary information, should now bring the conversation to a satisfactory, or at least a less stressful ending.
The last two sections are a mine of information. The Notes & Comments explain the situation clearly and present suggestions. The “Tools & Techniques section” acquaints learners with important communication techniques which will be useful, not only in reenacting the scene and resolving, if possible the conflict, but also day after day in all their interpersonal encounters.
